Many Could Learn From This Example
It really takes a special talent to bring a resource-rich country like Argentina to the brink of ruin, as President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and her husband, former President Nestor Kirchner, have done ("Argentines Rush to Buy Dollars Amid Fear of a Financial Crisis," World News, May 19). The lesson, and it is a good one for Hugo Chávez to heed, is that if governments destroy their economic and political credibility, large central-bank reserves will delay but not prevent the day of reckoning. Once markets lose faith in a government, it is almost impossible to gain it back.
Unfortunately for Argentina, the Kirchners have squandered their credibility and the day of reckoning is fast approaching.
