California es el bluest de los blue states. Y el poderoso sindicato de maestros y educadores mueve los piolines más importantes del sistema. Yo les di en alguna oportunidad ejemplos de los increíbles extremos a los que llega la cultura PC.
Ahora bien, qué pasa si les digo que en el Bay Area (of all places!) hay un par de escuelas que ponen el siguiente aviso cuando necesitan un profesor:
We are looking for hard working people who believe in free market capitalism. . . . Multicultural specialists, ultra liberal zealots and college-tainted oppression liberators need not apply.
Y qué pasa si les digo que la mayoría de los estudiantes en esas escuelas vienen de familias con escasos recursos y/o minorías étnicas?
Y si agrego a este dato que son las mejores escuelas públicas de California?
A quiénes les interese el tema... no se pierdan el artículo.

The state target is an API of 800. The statewide average for middle and high schools is below 750. For schools with mostly low-income students, it is around 650.
The oldest of the American Indian schools, the middle school known simply as American Indian Public Charter School, has an API of 967. Its two siblings -- American Indian Public Charter School II (also a middle school) and American Indian Public High School -- are not far behind.
Among the thousands of public schools in California, only four middle schools and three high schools score higher. None of them serves mostly underprivileged children.

So what are they doing?
The short answer is that American Indian attracts academically motivated students, relentlessly (and unapologetically) teaches to the test, wrings more seat time out of every school day, hires smart young teachers, demands near-perfect attendance, piles on the homework, refuses to promote struggling students to the next grade and keeps discipline so tight that there are no distractions or disruptions. Summer school is required.

ReplyDeletetodavia no se qué pensar... algunas cosas me gustan mucho... otras no tanto... creo que a esa edad el orden, la disciplina, el enfoque en los estudios, la "estructura" ayuda mucho a los chicos a crecer sin cometer errores devastadores en sus vidas...
Lo conversaré con la almohada y volveré a opinar mañana...
Y Vermont?, Mass, Connecticut?.

Recuerdo que en mi escuela secundaria (privada medio pelo) el cambio de los militares a la democracia alfonsinista representó pasar de un añó para otro de una disciplina razonable (comparable a la de cualquier país serio, alumnos callados en clase, sentados, respetuosos, etc) a la joda total, con alumnos a los gritos todo el tiempo, de pie por momentos, faltando el respeto a todo mayor en cuanta oportunidad se presentara.
Esta escuelas charter deberían ser el principal caballito de batalla de los conservadores en EE.UU. Si realmente se las impulsara (contra los sindicatos docentes recontra Demócratas) se libraría una batalla en la que valdría la pena poner casi todas las fichas.
